CHAPTER 17

Dallas

This was insane! There were men on board the rig destroying evidence and who knew what else, and Logan wanted to initiate some kind of intimate moment before they got in the water to be killed by sharks? Didn’t he know the Sea of Cortez was full of all kinds of maneaters? An open fire on board an oil rig surrounded by the remaining slick caused by the spill was a recipe for disaster.

To think all she’d wanted when she spied Logan with a picnic basket was to get down and dirty on the main platform. It would have been epic and given her an amazing memory each day when she walked across the site. Her stomach grumbled—food would have been good right before he fucked her again. Yeah, that was the ticket: fuck—eat—fuck. How sick was it that Logan was proposing, no scratch that, commanding that they get into dark water full of oil and predators, men were onboard destroying evidence and who knew what else, and she was thinking about getting naked and nasty with her new hunky boyfriend?

Boyfriend? Was that what Logan was? Boy? There was nothing boyish about him. Well, that wasn’t true. He did have the cutest boyish grin, as if he knew something nobody else did. Or maybe he shared it with his friends. The men in his unit, and their women, all seemed to be very close. It was nice to feel, for however long it lasted, as if she belonged with them as well.

She watched as Logan slid beneath the waves and waited for him to come back up. She was hoping he had some kind of jet propulsion unit to give them enough speed to get away from the rig. Dallas looked around to see if she could find SCUBA gear, a rebreather, or even a snorkel. No luck with the first two, but she did find a snorkel and mask. Maybe that would help. She put the mask on, securing it to her head before realizing that Logan would have no way to breathe. She removed the mask, wrapping the head strap around her wrist so it wouldn’t get lost.

The men above her on the main platform were no longer trying to be stealthy. Their feet pounded against the steel grating that passed for flooring, and she could hear them swearing. Well duh! Light a fire on steel, and the steel was going to get hot. She touched the end of the platform above her. Shit! She pulled back her fingers. They hadn’t had contact with the metal long enough to do lasting damage, but it hurt, nonetheless.

Dallas peered over the edge of the small loading platform. No sign of Logan. Oh God, had something happened to him? Then, as if to answer her question and her worst nightmare, a dorsal fin cut through the water. It was getting dark, but she could make out the distinctive crescent-shaped caudal fin, the larger of the two dorsal fins. Shit! A Shortfin Mako.
